Choosing a Trading Platform in Australia

The platform you trade on determines what orders you can place, how fast you can act, and what you can automate.

What a trading platform actually does

A trading platform is the software you use to place orders, watch prices, and manage open positions. It does not make decisions for you, and it does not change the underlying risk of trading gold or any other instrument. The platform is the tool; your order types, charting and execution are what you need to assess.

When comparing platforms, start with the basics: can you place market, limit and stop orders quickly? Can you set alerts, and do they work on mobile? For day trading, speed and reliability matter more than extra indicators. For longer-term CFD positions, charting and risk tools matter more than one-click trading.

Mobile, desktop, web and automation

The same platform may feel very different on a phone, a desktop app, or a web browser. A mobile app that lags in fast conditions can turn a planned exit into a worse price, especially in gold, where a one-pip move on a standard lot is worth A$10. Test the platform you will actually use, not just the desktop demo.

Automation is the other fork in the road. If you want to run an Expert Advisor or a cBot, you need a platform that supports it natively. FxPro publishes support for MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge, but no platform is universally best. Choose based on whether you trade manually or algorithmically, and on the order types each platform offers.

Why we do not publish spreads or execution speeds

Many comparison pages list broker spreads, commissions and execution speeds as if they were fixed. They are not; they move with liquidity and volatility. Publishing a single number for a gold spread would be misleading, so we refuse to do it. Instead, use our position size and pip value calculators to see what a given move means in A$ for your trade size.

The only broker fact we state is this: FxPro publishes support for MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge. FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC. It does not hold an ASIC licence, so Australian residents deal with an offshore entity — check this before funding. We are not a broker and we do not advise you to choose any particular one.

A worked example in gold

Suppose you trade gold (XAU/USD) at a reference price near 4275.0, with 1 standard lot equal to 100 oz and one pip equal to 0.01. At 1:500 leverage, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin. That is the kind of figure our margin calculator can give you instantly, before you open a trade.

Run the numbers for your own account currency. Our profit calculator converts a pip move into A$ so you can see the real dollar effect of a 50-pip swing. If you are still deciding between platform choices, the question is not which one looks best in a screenshot, but which one lets you place, manage and automate the trades you actually take.
