How it works

The pip value calculator takes your lot size and account currency, then multiplies the pip size by the contract size and converts the result. For gold, one pip is 0.01 and one standard lot is 100 oz, so the USD pip value per lot is always 1.00.

Pip value = lots × 100 × pip

What This Calculator Answers and When an Australian Trader Needs It

This calculator answers how much profit or loss you make for every 0.01 move in XAU/USD, given your lot size. Australian traders need it to set realistic profit targets and stop distances in dollar terms.

It is essential when your account is in AUD. The raw pip value is in USD because gold is quoted in USD, so you must convert to Australian dollars to understand your actual P&L.

Use it before entering a trade to see if a 10-pip stop equals A$20 or A$200. That knowledge prevents overtrading and helps you stick to your risk plan.

The Formula in Plain Words

The formula is: pip value in account currency = lot size × contract size × pip size × conversion rate. For XAU/USD, contract size is 100 oz per lot and pip size is 0.01. So one lot gives a pip value of 1.00 in USD.

You need three inputs: lot size (e.g., 0.50), account currency (AUD for Australians), and the current AUD/USD rate if your account is not in USD. The calculator multiplies and converts automatically.

The result is the value of one pip in your account currency. For a 0.10 lot, the USD pip value is 0.10 (10 cents). If you trade 2.60 lots, it is 2.60 USD per pip.

Worked Example on Gold

Suppose you trade 0.50 lots of XAU/USD and your account is in AUD. The reference gold price is 4275.0, but that does not affect pip value. The USD pip value is 0.50 lots × 100 oz × 0.01 = 0.50 USD per pip.

Assume the AUD/USD rate is 0.6500. To convert USD to AUD, divide by 0.6500: 0.50 ÷ 0.6500 = 0.7692 AUD per pip. So a 10-pip move would change your equity by about A$7.69.

If you had a USD account, the pip value would simply be 0.50 USD. The calculator does the conversion for you, ensuring you always know the impact in your home currency.

Common Mistakes and How to Read the Result Correctly

A common mistake is thinking one pip is 0.01 for all instruments. For gold, yes, but for forex pairs like AUD/USD a pip is 0.0001. Always check the pip definition for your instrument.

Another mistake is using the wrong conversion direction. If your account is AUD and the quote is AUD/USD, you divide the USD amount by the AUD/USD rate to get AUD. Multiplying would give a wrong, larger number.

Read the pip value as a per-pip figure. Multiply it by the number of pips moved to get total profit or loss. Remember that the pip value is constant for a fixed lot size, regardless of the gold price level.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the pip value for 1 lot of gold in AUD?

For 1.00 lot of XAU/USD, the pip value is 1.00 USD. To convert to AUD, divide by the current AUD/USD rate. For example, at 0.6500, the pip value is 1.00 ÷ 0.6500 = A$1.5385 per pip.

Does the pip value change when the gold price moves?

No, the pip value in USD is fixed for a given lot size because the pip size (0.01) and contract size (100 oz) are constant. It is independent of the gold price. Only the currency conversion to AUD changes with the AUD/USD rate.

How many pips is a $1 move in gold?

Since one pip is 0.01, a $1.00 move in gold equals 100 pips. For example, from 4275.0 to 4276.0 is 100 pips. If you hold 0.10 lots, that move is worth 0.10 USD per pip × 100 pips = $10.00.

Can I use this calculator for a mini lot (0.10) on gold?

Yes, enter 0.10 as the lot size. The USD pip value will be 0.10 (10 cents) because 0.10 × 100 oz × 0.01 = 0.10. Convert to AUD if needed by dividing by the AUD/USD rate.

Why is my pip value different from my broker's platform?

Brokers may display pip value in the quote currency (USD) by default, or they may use a slightly different conversion rate. Check your account currency setting. The calculator uses the mid-market AUD/USD rate, which can differ from the broker's rate by a few pips.
