Gold trading hours

Gold trades nearly 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, but liquidity and spreads shift with the global sessions.

The 24x5 session structure

Gold trades from Monday morning in Sydney (around 7:00 AEST) until Saturday morning in New York (around 7:00 AEST), with a daily one-hour break for server maintenance. This 24x5 structure means Australian traders can access the market during their daytime, evening, or early morning.

The trading day is divided into three main sessions: Asia-Pacific (Sydney and Tokyo), Europe (London), and North America (New York). Each session has its own character, with London and New York seeing the highest volume and tightest spreads.

The deepest-liquidity window for Australia

For Australian traders, the deepest liquidity and tightest spreads occur when London and New York overlap, from about 22:00 to 02:00 AEST (or 23:00 to 03:00 AEDT in daylight saving). During this window, gold often makes its largest daily moves and spreads are at their narrowest.

If you prefer to trade during Australian daytime, the Sydney session (from 7:00 AEST) offers moderate liquidity, but spreads may be slightly wider than the London/New York overlap. The Tokyo session (from 9:00 AEST) adds some depth but gold can be range-bound until Europe opens.

The thin hours to avoid

The thinnest liquidity occurs between the close of New York (around 7:00 AEST) and the open of Tokyo, roughly 7:00 to 9:00 AEST. During this rollover period, spreads can widen significantly and prices can gap on unexpected news.

Also avoid trading immediately before major economic releases, such as US CPI or Federal Reserve decisions, because spreads can widen dramatically in the seconds before and after the announcement. Check an economic calendar and plan around these events.

Events that widen spreads

Gold spreads are not fixed; they widen during high-impact news like US non-farm payrolls, Federal Reserve rate decisions, and inflation reports. These events can cause gold to move tens of dollars in minutes, and the spread reflects the increased risk to liquidity providers.

Australian traders should also note that local holidays, such as Australia Day or Easter, can reduce liquidity in the Asia session, leading to wider spreads. Always be aware of the global economic calendar and adjust your position size accordingly.
