What the spot price is and how it is set
The spot gold price is the current market price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce of gold, quoted in US dollars as XAU/USD. It is set by the largest over-the-counter market in the world, where banks, refiners, and institutional traders buy and sell physical gold and derivatives around the clock.
The price you see on this page is a reference price near 4275.0. It reflects the most recent trades and quotes from major liquidity providers. Because gold trades globally, the price moves in response to orders from London, New York, Zurich, and Sydney, with no single exchange setting the official rate.
Why your broker's price differs: the spread
Your broker's gold quote will always show two prices: the bid (where you can sell) and the ask (where you can buy). The difference between them is the spread, which is the broker's fee for providing liquidity. FxPro offers competitive spreads on gold, meaning the gap is typically tight, but it widens during volatile news or thin liquidity.
For an Australian trader, a spread of even a few cents on XAU/USD matters because one standard lot is 100 ounces. A 30-cent spread on a full lot costs US$30, or roughly A$45 depending on the exchange rate. Always factor the spread into your profit/loss calculations.
How to read the change and refresh
The live price updates continuously, showing the last traded price and the change from the previous daily close. A positive change means gold is up in US dollar terms; a negative change means it is down. The percentage change tells you how much it has moved relative to the previous session.
Because gold is quoted in US dollars, Australian traders must also watch the AUD/USD exchange rate. Even if the US dollar price of gold is unchanged, a falling Australian dollar makes gold more expensive in A$ terms, and vice versa.
How this price feeds the calculators
Every calculator on this site uses the live XAU/USD price as its starting point, so your position size, pip value, margin, and profit/loss estimates reflect current market conditions. The pivot point calculator uses the previous session's high, low, and close to map levels, independent of the live price.
By pairing the live price with the calculators, you can size a trade at the current quote, see the margin required at your leverage, and know exactly where your stop and target sit relative to pivot support and resistance.
